Working closely with the existing fire strategy and MEP infrastructure, the studio developed a series of carefully considered joinery-led interventions. These were designed to integrate seamlessly with existing services, ensuring no disruption to fire compartmentation, sprinkler layouts, or ventilation strategies, while still delivering a meaningful uplift to the student experience across the ground and basement levels.
The design concept draws strongly on Bournemouth’s architectural heritage and coastal setting. A sequence of arched colonnades was introduced to define a clear circulation route through the amenity spaces, framing key destinations including a bar, library, games lounge, TV lounge, and study areas. These arches reference the nearby Georgian architecture and the cast-iron colonnades found throughout the town, creating a sense of rhythm, familiarity, and place.
The material and colour palette is inspired by coastal rock sediment, using layered natural tones to bring warmth and texture to the interiors. Arched detailing is further expressed through bespoke joinery within the library bookcases, mirrored elements in the gym, and decorative lighting features in the reception lobby and study spaces, creating a cohesive and characterful identity throughout the scheme.
