Crusader Mill
2021 - 2022
This converted mill was first built by Parr, Curtis and Madeley in the late 1840s with the building playing a crucial role in Manchester’s booming textile industry. The studio was appointed by Capital & Centric to provide interior design services for one of their 2 bed duplex penthouse apartments. The brief was to create a fresh, modern aesthetic that felt high end, and to help tell a story of this 200-year-old piece of Mancunian history.
The bones of the Crusader Mill provided a fantastic canvas on which to work; from exposed brickwork, timber beams, high ceilings, and huge windows that bathe the apartment in daylight. Our design approach was to provide a light touch that allowed these original features to really come through.
Design details of note include a deep rust velvet sofa which was chosen to provide warmth and act as the main focal point to the living space. The colour was chosen in reference to the original brickwork of the mill, with deep greens used for the bar stools, dining chairs, and master bedroom wall paint and soft furnishings. This provided a contrasting accent colour, referencing the abundance of planting found within the development.
Industrial materials, such as stone for the coffee table, Georgian wire glass within the media unit, and leather found within the feature pendant light over the kitchen island, were all chosen as a connection to the Mill’s industrial heritage.
Even the smallest of details were considered in the way that the space was staged, from a custom branded bike hanging in the entrance hallway, to providing personally branded candles by a local candlemaker.
In 2022 the project received the Northern Design Award for ‘Best Interior Design Project under £100k’.
